The sage Dwaraka Maharshi performed deep penance on Seshachala Hill during the transition from Satya to Treta Yuga. An anthill grew around him, and from within it, Lord Venkateswara manifested himself (Swayambhu). Only His crown, chest and navel rose above the earth; His feet remain in Patala Loka. Because the sage faced north, the Lord emerged facing south — the only major Vaishnavite shrine with a south-facing sanctum, earning it the name Chinna Tirupati.

In the 11th century, the sage-reformer Ramanujacharya visited the hill and found that the Swayambhu clay idol could not receive liquid abhishekam without dissolving. He installed a second, standing granite idol of Venkateswara beside it, brought from Tirupati. This makes Dwaraka Tirumala the only shrine in India with two primary idols worshipped together under one golden vimana — the Swayambhu grants moksha, the stone idol grants worldly prosperity.

Emperor Aja of Ayodhya, Lord Rama's grandfather, once passed Seshachala Hill without stopping to pray, en route to a royal swayamvara. On his return, rival kings ambushed his caravan; only when he surrendered facing the hill did peace return. The tale teaches that even emperors must bow before Seshachala.

Seen from the plains, Seshachala Hill resembles a coiled serpent — Adisesha. Lord Shiva rests upon its raised hood at Konda Malleswara Swamy temple, while Lord Venkateswara rests along its body, uniting Shaivite and Vaishnavite worship on one ridge.

Sacred red ants called Konijulu are said to guard the Swayambhu idol's earthen base. Whenever liquid touches the mound, the ants appear, so priests never perform liquid abhishekam on the clay idol — only dry sandal paste and silk vastrams.

Nearby Pedavegi (ancient Vengipura) was the capital of Andhra dynasties for nine centuries. During a siege, the royal women chose to leap into the citadel well rather than face captivity — the well stands today as a memorial to their courage.
